Sheska's glasses dug awkward streaks onto her nose and temples, the wire frames knocked crooked when she'd finally collapsed onto her books. The thick glass outlined her red-rimmed eyes and tear-stained cheeks, a reminder of the trauma of the past few days. Though Hughes had fired her shortly before his death, she had returned to work stubbornly, unable to let the mystery go unsolved. Besides, it was better than sitting at home, just... thinking.
Her heart was not made of automail, as some seemed to be. How could Colonel Mustang be so coldly dismissive? Wasn't he Hughes' friend as well? Didn't he want to know? Sheska was desperate to find out what had really happened, and what Hughes had found before he was so suddenly killed.
Stirring restlessly, she shifted her arms on the book that served as her pillow. Somewhere in her half-dreams, she knew she should wake up and continue, but her body was just too exhausted. Dimly, she felt strong hands move and lift her, carrying her like a child. Murmuring incoherently, she rested her head against a broad shoulder and wrapped her arms around the man's neck, but did not open her eyes. As she was placed in her bed, she felt gloved fingers remove her glasses and brush her thick bangs out of her eyes.
"Goodnight, Sheska."
